Replacing a toilet might sound like a daunting task, but in reality, it's a straightforward DIY project that can save you a significant amount of money on plumber fees. With a few basic tools and some patience, you can tackle this project yourself and give your bathroom a fresh look. In this guide, we'll walk you through the step-by-step process of replacing a toilet, making it a simple and achievable task for anyone willing to give it a try.

Step 1: Gather Your Tools and Materials

Before you begin, make sure you have all the necessary tools and materials on hand. You'll need:

A new toilet
Adjustable wrench
Screwdriver (both flathead and Phillips)
Putty knife
Wax ring
Closet bolts
Toilet supply line
Level
Towels or rags

Step 2: Turn Off the Water Supply

Locate the shut-off valve behind your toilet and turn it clockwise to shut off the water supply. Flush the toilet to drain the tank and bowl completely.

Step 3: Disconnect the Water Supply Line

Using an adjustable wrench, disconnect the water supply line from the bottom of the tank. Have a towel or rag handy to catch any residual water that may drip out.

Step 4: Remove the Toilet

Loosen the nuts on the closet bolts securing the toilet to the floor. Once loosened, carefully lift the toilet straight up and off the closet bolts. Place the old toilet on a towel or rag to prevent any water or debris from spreading.

Step 5: Clean the Flange and Install New Wax Ring

Use a putty knife to scrape away any old wax or debris from the flange on the floor. Once clean, place a new wax ring onto the flange, ensuring it is centered and seated properly.

Step 6: Install the New Toilet

Carefully lower the new toilet onto the closet bolts, making sure the bolts come through the holes in the base of the toilet. Gently press down to compress the wax ring and create a seal.

Step 7: Secure the Toilet

Place washers and nuts onto the closet bolts and tighten them evenly using an adjustable wrench. Be careful not to overtighten, as this could crack the porcelain.

Step 8: Connect the Water Supply Line

Reattach the water supply line to the bottom of the tank and hand-tighten it. Use an adjustable wrench to give it a final snug turn, being careful not to over-tighten and risk damaging the connection.

Step 9: Check for Leaks and Adjust

Turn the water supply back on and allow the tank to fill. Check for any leaks around the base of the toilet and tighten connections if necessary. Use a level to ensure the toilet is sitting evenly on the floor, and adjust as needed by shimming the base.

Step 10: Enjoy Your Newly Installed Toilet

Once you've confirmed that everything is in working order and leak-free, give your new toilet a test flush. Congratulations, you've successfully replaced your toilet and saved yourself the cost of hiring a plumber!

Replacing a toilet may seem like a daunting task, but with the right tools and a little know-how, it's a DIY project that anyone can tackle. By following these simple steps, you can save yourself the expense of hiring a plumber and give your bathroom a fresh new look. So why wait?
